On August 27, Alibaba announced an additional donation of RMB 10 million to support disaster relief, transitional resettlement, and reconstruction in the mudslide-stricken area around the Gyirong border crossing in Gyirong County, Shigatse, Xizang. The announcement came after it had already rushed two batches of essential supplies to the frontlines in the immediate aftermath of the disaster the day before.

At around 10:30 a.m. on August 26, a massive mudslide on the Nepalese side sent floodwaters into Chinese territory, causing significant casualties and leaving many unaccounted for around the Gyirong border crossing. Upon learning about the disaster, Alibaba swiftly activated its emergency response mechanism. The first batch of urgently mobilized supplies, including 2,900 cartons of food, drinking water, and other essentials, arrived in Gyirong Township on the evening of August 26.

A second batch, comprising 5,000 cartons of instant food, was dispatched from Shigatse on August 27.

Raincoats and rain boots funded by Alibaba Philanthropy Foundation/Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms and merchants participating in the Goods for Good Program were also loaded onto trucks in Lhasa and sent to Gyirong County, Shigatse.

According to Alibaba Philanthropy Foundation, the additional donation of RMB 10 million will be allocated based on actual needs on the ground, with a focus on priorities such as aid for affected residents, infrastructure repairs, and prevention of secondary disasters. In the next steps, Alibaba will do its utmost to support disaster relief and reconstruction efforts, helping the region return to normal life and work as quickly as possible.
